If you bleed Husker red, now is your chance to prove it. For the first time, our college conference is hosting a nationwide blood donation competition. Healthcare company Abbott and the Big Ten are out to tackle nationwide blood shortages with “The We Give Blood Drive.” The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is currently at the top of the leaderboard, with over 3,044 donations from students, alumni and fans across the country. This includes 113 people who donated Nov. 6 at Memorial Stadium and thousands more across the state. If we pull off the win, UNL will be awarded $1 million to advance student or community health from Abbott. If you want to help ensure Nebraska wins…
In addition to helping Nebraska win, you are also quite literally saving someone’s life when you donate blood. Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion. More than 80% of deaths in the operating room are due to blood loss. Twenty-five percent of donated blood goes to cancer patients. And 1 in 83 moms receive blood after childbirth: Moms like Ellen Wichman, 2012 University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate, who received nine life-saving units of blood after the birth of her son in 2017. We hope you’ll join thousands across the country in rolling up your sleeves for good old Nebraska U! Let’s show the competition that There is No Place Like Nebraska. Go Big Red!
