We have reached the end of an era. Three of our most prominent and beloved faculty have announced they will retire at the end of the semester. Over the last 20 years, Joe Starita, Amy Struthers and Trina Creighton have been pillars of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications and impacted the lives of thousands of students. On June 30, journalism professor Joe Starita will retire after 21 years at CoJMC. During this time, Starita led the college’s award-winning depth reporting program, taught journalism ethics to hundreds of students and authored three award-winning non-fiction books that enhanced our understanding of Native American history.

Come join us for a two-hour workshop on May 12 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. via Zoom that provides practical guidance about challenging biases and developing approaches to storytelling for richer, deeper journalism practices. The workshop instructors will be Elissa Yancey, CEO of A Picture's Worth, and Alexis Wray, a freelance journalist.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln CoJMC’s Bateman Team was announced as a finalist in the Public Relations Student Society of America Bateman Case Study Competition on April 21. The top three finalists will present to a panel of judges on May 13 to compete for the first-place spot.

UNL’s team took second place in District 9 of the American Advertising Federation’s Virtual National Student Advertising Competition on April 16, 2021. District 9 includes colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri. This year had the largest pool of competitors with a total of 10 teams.

While out walking his dog, UNL’s Matt Waite realized that the annual rite of spring and college basketball was also an ideal opportunity to apply some lessons he was teaching in Sports Media and Communication 460: Advanced Sports Data Analysis. Some of the 19 undergrads in the class might be unfamiliar with, if not openly wary of, the quantitative realm, but most were already planning to fill out brackets. So, he decided to turn the ritual exercise into a class exercise.

Jenn Sheppard feels most at home on two wheels and open trails. As a sponsored off-road motorcycle athlete, she’s competed in countless races over the past three decades. She’s equally as passionate about her role as assistant professor of practice in sports media and communication at UNL, where she strives to bring lessons from the racetrack into the classroom.

About five years ago, Nebraska journalism professor Joseph Weber became intrigued by news accounts of young Somali Americans in Minnesota accused in a plot to join ISIS. In May 2016, he traveled to Minneapolis to attend the lengthy trial of three Somali-American men.

This year’s Seline Lecture guest speaker was executive editor of the Omaha World-Herald Randy Essex. The virtual event had more than 50 attendees. His talk "Journalism Love Stories" covered why a news career is both important and fun.

Five CoJMC majors were named Chancellor’s Scholars on March 26. To be named a Chancellor’s Scholar is the highest academic award the university offers to undergraduate students.

CoJMC's Climate Change Nebraska project swept up 11 awards – five for first place and six for second – in a regional competition honoring the best in student journalism.

Five CoJMC students will receive scholarships from the Omaha Press Club for the 2021-22 academic year.

Six University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications students, one alum and associate professor John Shrader took home awards from the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association Eric Sevareid Awards Competition in April 2021.

Alumni Tyler Loebig and Madeline Christensen, both from Kearney, Nebraska, were honored by Lincoln’s American Advertising Federation chapter as the Ad Rookies of the Year. Christensen graduated from UNL in 2017 with a degree in journalism and graphic design. Loebig graduated from UNL in 2020 with a degree in advertising and public relations, as well as graphic design.
