What’s your major/minor: Actuarial Science

What UNL activities are you involved in: I am involved in intramural sports (flag football and basketball) and am an active member in the actuarial science club.

Why did you choose UNL: I chose UNL for many reasons. One of them being that the university was very active in wanting me to come. They sent me happy holidays cards, a happy birthday card, kept me up-to-date on the university, etc, and I really appreciated that. They also have a very good actuarial science program which made the decision easier. When I toured the campus between my junior and senior year of high school it felt right, the campus, the downtown area, Husker football, it all seemed like I was meant to be here.

What are the ways this scholarship has helped you: This scholarship has been very helpful. It got me involved in campus activities, as well as meeting new friends. Some of my closest friends so far have been from the scholarship program. It also has given me a step ahead as it has given me the resources to be successful.

What’s your message to those who funded your scholarship: My message would be that I am very thankful, and that this scholarship helped make the university more affordable.

Rachel Becker - Pleasanton, Calif.

What’s your major/minor: I am majoring in Advertising and PR. I am looking into minoring in Digital Humanities, Dance and Computer Science.

What UNL activities are you involved in: I am involved with Advertising Club. We meet every other week and talk about possible internships around Lincoln and how to improve our portfolios. Next semester I am also looking into joining the intramural Water Polo team.

Why did you choose UNL: When I first started applying to colleges, I knew I wanted to go out of state. I looked into schools with top journalism programs. I also wanted a big school that loves their football and has amazing spirit. One of my older cousins went to UNL and graduated in 2009. She recommend applying, and the more I looked into Nebraska, I loved it. Going on the campus tour was icing on the cake. It was a beautiful campus that was easy to get around and had lots going on. And I fell in love with the Nebraska Nice lifestyle. Since I have been here, people have been so kind and welcoming.

What’s your major/minor: BFA in Art with an emphasis in Graphic Design

What UNL activities are you involved in: OASIS, Scarlet Guard, and Art League

Why did you choose UNL: UNL is located in a state that I've never been to, plus I really enjoy the laid back lifestyle of Lincoln compared to the larger cities I've lived in. UNL really just nailed a lot of the stuff I was looking for, which included a more 'traditional' style of architecture, large student body, top graphic design program, and a multitude of different things really.

What are the ways this scholarship has helped you: What are the ways this scholarship has helped you:The scholarship has really helped the burden of the out of state tuition that UNL has ($21,000 if you were curious) along with the $10,000 per year housing that we have to use for one year.

What’s your message to those who funded your scholarship: Please don't stop donating to this scholarship. There are many students from our area of Florida that are dying to get out of state but can't afford to nor have the grades to land a huge scholarship from a university like myself. Every little bit of change matters so much to those who struggle to make ends meet. This scholarship really does help out, even though many students look at it as just a small thousand dollar help.

What’s your major/minor: I’m currently changing my major to undeclared because interior design just isn’t for me.

What UNL activities are you involved in: These past three months as a freshman have been some of the best in my life. I have joined the Sorority Alpha Chi Omega and met some of the most amazing people. I’m also a part of the Women’s Volleyball Club here on campus and enjoy playing competitively with all of my teammates from all over the US.

Why did you choose UNL: I chose UNL because I’ve always had dream of going here and some of my family lives near Lincoln and I wanted to be closer to them. I’m very happy with my choice because I’ve made so many great memories like going to Husker football games with new friends and discovering parts of Lincoln that remind me of back home.

What are the ways this scholarship has helped you: This scholarship has allowed me to go to a school I have dreamed about since I was little and I am very grateful that I was chosen for it. Through this scholarship I have been introduced to others who also received one through Nebraska Legends Alumni and it has given me the opportunity to learn more about what the Alumni do for UNL.

What’s your message to those who funded your scholarship: Thank you so much for the scholarship to help me achieve a college education.
